If you know me, you’ll understand how much I dislike winding up my yarn. I’m just really impatient, and it takes forever. When Caydo reached out to send me their newest knitting gadget, I was surprised but excited to give it a try. I had been skeptical about automatic yarn winders, but if this one could help me spend less time winding and more time knitting, I’d be a happy person. Here’s my review of the Caydo automatic yarn winder.

For disclosure, Caydo sent me this product for free; however, all opinions are my own, so don’t think I’m going soft on them.

Before the product arrived, I did some research to see what others thought of the yarn winder. I was curious and a bit nosy, wanting to get the scoop. I found that many reviews were mixed, ranging from awful experiences to claims of the product arriving broken. This didn’t fill me with confidence. However, amidst the negative reviews, I did find several overwhelmingly positive ones praising the quality. But what did I think?

I love it.

No, seriously, I do.

I might have a small bias since I’ve spent the past year winding yarn by hand with a manual winder that was not great. However, I truly enjoy using the Caydo, and I no longer dread spending long hours winding yarn until my hands cramp up.

The machine is made of metal and high-quality plastic, which is surprising. I know that some cheap manual winders are made of similar materials but feel very flimsy, as if they come from a budget factory.

The Caydo feels good to use, and I was able to set it up easily without needing the instructions—this is saying something, as I’m typically terrible at assembling things, even Lego sets. The machine comes with a few attachments that screw into the main unit. These attachments help with tension and guide the yarn in. Once you set it up, you’re good to go. It also includes a USB-C power cable, which is a bonus because most budget tech products usually come with Micro USB. My only issue is that it includes an American power socket in the box, which is useless here in the UK. You could get an adapter, but that requires extra effort. Fortunately, because it uses USB-C, you can use just about any charger, even if the instructions advise against it—don’t tell anyone!

Now, let’s talk about the main feature: winding. Once you start the machine, you can generally leave it running. However, I don’t recommend doing this if you're winding from a yarn hank, as any factory knots could jam the machine. It’s best to keep an eye on it. I personally recommend using your finger to apply a small amount of pressure on the yarn while winding; this achieves a tighter yarn cake that holds its shape longer.

The machine itself is relatively quiet, with only the sounds from the tension parts creating a satisfying pumping noise. This means you can wind yarn at night without disturbing your significant other.

Final thoughts:

Overall, I think the Caydo yarn winder is an excellent little machine, and its price makes it accessible to most people. A standard manual yarn winder can cost around £30 on Amazon, so if you knit or crochet a lot, I would recommend the Caydo as a worthwhile investment. It saves you so much time, and I actually look forward to winding my yarn now.
